Equal Billing - Europe Dinghy on Lake Garda

Enough about the Merry Finnster on Lake Garda - how about the world's most popular Classic Moth - the Europe Dinghy. One of the top Swedish Europe Dinghy sailors put together this intriguing travelogue of the 2015 regatta on Lake Garda, with plenty of hand-held GoPro planing shots, plenty of spray everywhere, all set to the appropriate bombastic music score. Sit back, pull out a beer or potato chips - your choice - and enjoy!

Also - been reading some of your earlier posts - I think I saw a very Red Herreshoff Rozanette design somewhere on your blog - great!!

Alden,

I ran into Paul Miller, my friend who owns the Rozinante I raced on, last week. He said he had been busy replacing the cockpit sole which had become rotted because of the lack of ventilation in the bilge. Oh, the joy of owning a large wooden boat. A tip-of-the-hat to those owners though because they maintain a beauty in sailboats that cannot be found in the modern designs.

Tweezerman - Great to hear that that this beautiful little yacht is still owned by someone who is prepared to give it the TLC it so richly deserves. - I may live in NZ but I feel that all these beautiful classic yachts by American and British designers of that golden period of yacht design belong in the hearts of yacht enthusiasts everywhere.

The road trip to lake Garda is the Swedish version of our road trip to Gulfport for the Mid-Winters! Does anyone else think that this guy's sail is way too flat for the amount of mast bend? Having said that, he appears to have good boat speed, at least going to weather.

George,

The GoPro cameras, with their very wide angle lenses, tend to wholly distort 3D shapes that are wide and tall like a sail. I have taken some sail shape photos with my waterproof camera which also has a wide angle lens and been surprised to see they have little correlation with what I was seeing on the water.
